Racial Stereotyping
in advertising has a long history. And
actually it is still happening today, although it’s mostly done for shock value
and to raise awareness and encourage discussion.
- How does advertising mirror society’s attitudes?
In advertising we see the portrayals, points of view, and strong
attitudes of many different groups and cultures. Society’s big trends are advertised every
second of everyday, helping shape the world we live in.
- Does advertising have responsibilities in addressing negative
representations of race and ethnicity?
Ethics and moral
responsibility may be the first or last priority on an advertisements
checklist. It’s easy to depict broken
morals when watching TV these days, with all of the ads and commercials. I think it’ save to say that the highest
priority’s are money goals and just functioning as a business without moral
objectives in mind. Bias generalizations about groups of people are easily seen
in many advertisements today.
- Is it every right to racially stereotype for advertisement
purposes?
This is a very good question. I
believe that no one should ignore our history.
Historically we have seen accounts of gruesome acts of racial
discrimination, forced assimilation, genocide and ethnocide. Power struggles and war are important
realities that everyone should not ignore.
In advertising, we need to raise questions in order to provoke thought. With that said, I think it is very important
to create emotional, thought provoking advertisements, so people will not
forget the past, and keep fighting for a better future.
