Semiotics and Ads

Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols.  Semiotics differs between groups and cultures.  Below are three images with my own depiction of denotative and connotative meaning based on semiotics.  Denotation looks at the images literal description while the connotative perspective looks at the abstract meaning.

This is an ad for the Body Art & Graffiti Expo
uShaka Village Walk in 2007.
I find this image very captivation and interesting.  The striking bright orange color caught my eye right off the bat.  It’s obviously an image of a clown fish painted on a person’s hand and wrist.  The art is very well done, looking very lifelike.  The obvious denotation (literal meaning) is; body art advertising as a product. The connotation (abstract meaning) is; the fish is a hand and the hand is a fish!  I think the connotative meaning draws a lot of people in because many people, groups and cultures can relate to and identify with body art.  Also, many people relate to dress-up and dressing in costume!

This is the J’Adore Perfume ad with Chrlize Theron.  The commercial advertisement is very seductive and incredibly captivating.  Charlize Theron is a very well known A list actress and known for her beauty.  This commercial uses her beauty and sex appeal to brand the product and sell it.  The denotation in this ad is; perfume advertisement.  The connotative meaning with in the message is; sex, luxury, seduction and wealth.  I like this ad for it’s captivating qualities.

This is a billboard ad for Roaring Camp Railroads in Felton, CA.  The image is of children on a train with giant Redwoods in the background.  The denotative meaning in this ad is; Daily Train Tours.  The connotative meaning in this ad is; train tours are great for children and the whole family.
