Ads and Agencies

There is a wide variety of Ad Agencies to choose from and each one may tailor to specific market, brand or purpose.  After looking over my notes from class I became more interested in the specific rolls with in an Ad Agency.  Specifically, I am curious about the Production Department within an Ad Agency.  I have some interest because I have a friend who is a Production Assistant (PA) and another friend who is a Producer for Advertising and she also owns her own business – so essentially she must also Advertise her own Productions. Right?  I am feeling very curious, and feel the need to investigate her business to learn more about it.

After looking at my friends website( http://www.jenniferbullockproductions.com/ ) and talking with her I was surprised to learn so much of what she does.

Jenny told me that she is usually hired by a photographer, who is hired by and ad agency or a design firm, who is hired by the client.  The client can be any company such as; Target, Toyota, apple, Coca Cola...etc.

Jenny’s production company is a Full Service Photography Production Company which provides this list of services:

Estimating
Casting
Talent Negotiation
Location Scouting
Location Management & Permitting
Crew & Vendor Sourcing
Stylists, Props & Wardrobe
Set Design & Construction
Digital Workflow and Data Management
Studio & Equipment Rentals
Travel & Transportation
Customs & Carnets
Catering & Craft Services
Billing
Green Production Guidance
Green PAs

On Jenny’s website I noticed something very modern and unique!  She markets as being “green” conscious company within a growing green minded industry.  I was very pleased to see this because when I think of my lovely friend Jenny – I also think “green” because she is just that type of person – always going the extra mile to use less and recycle more!  I think it’s awesome when business are conscious about recycling things rather than throwing things away.

In the past, Jenny has invited me shadow her during one of her “shoots” and now that I am getting to know more about this industry I actually may take her up on the offer!  I am feeling more and more curious about this industry.

I also did a little research on Ad Agencies and found Forbes top 10 list! Nothing caught my eye so after thinking of what ads I have liked I decided to search for the brand “GUESS?”  Every since I was little “GUESS?” ads literally stop me from turning the page when I look in magazines.  The weird thing is that I don’t identify with the Brand at all, I don’t own anything GUESS? – so why do I like the ads I wonder?  I think I like the romance they depict the most!!

After some research I found that the “GUESS?” brand actually has its own Advertising Department. (according to: http://www.wikinvest.com/stock/Guess%3F_(GES)/Advertising_Marketing)   They are well known for their signature super sexy black and white photography ads and those are the ones that I was thinking of when I decided to find out what Ad Agency works for Guess – but I guess GUESS has its own???!!!!!!!!!

Is there an easy way to find out what agency does a business's ads?

First blog ever!

I successfully added my Intro to Advertising class and after some confusion I am finally and officially blogging! WOW! How exciting!  This is very new to me!

Here is a quick little intro:
I am a Communications Studies major at SJSU and this is my final semester, which has me feeling excited and nervous!  I have been a student since I can remember and the thought of not taking classes next semester is a little terrifying, but I'm sure it will all work out!  This semester I have enrolled in many classes, all of which are outside of my major, so I am a little out of my comfort zone, but it feels good and refreshing!

   Week One:
We covered a deep and very interesting history of Advertising which was very helpful in getting to know the business since I know very little about it.  I see that Advertising has evolved very fast and has stayed competitive, much like the technology business.  We covered Brands and Branding, which was very interesting.  The link between brands and personal/social identity has always been fascinating to me.

While in class we broke up into small groups to discuss brands and to choose a favorite and least favorite commercial advertisement.  Everyone agreed that the the AT&T commercials were very good!!

The group agreed that all pop up adds are the worst because they are bothersome, specifically the ones on Pandora.
